Girl with A Pearl Earring, by Tracy Chevalier. Griet, the young daughter of a tilemaker in seventeeth century Holland, obtains her first job, as a servant in Vermeer's household. Tracy Chevalier shows us through Griet's eyes, the complicated family, the society of the small town of Delft, and life with an obsessive genius. Griet loves being drawn into his artistic life, and leaving her former drudgery, but the cost to her own survival may be high. The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe by C S Lewis. Narnia... a land frozen in eternal winter...a land waiting to be set free. Four adventurers step through a wardrobe door and into the land of Narnia - a land enslaved by the power of the White Witch. But when almost all hope is lost, the return of the Great Lion, Aslan, signals a great change...and a great sacrifice.Specky Magee by Felice Arena. Specky Magee is 12 years old and mad about Australian Rules football. He is also a very talented player. Not that anyone in his family would know - or care. Specky plays footy every Saturday and there's never anyone barracking for him on the sideline. One day Specky finds a baby photo of himself dressed up in footy gear. He knows that his parents would never have done this as they hate footy. Specky begins to suspect that he might be adopted, and the story becomes his search for a father - his real 'footy-loving' father. Felice Arena has written a story that combines a compelling storyline with real football action. A story that will appeal to both boys and girls, whether or not they are footy mad.
