Communication

  • Look for examples in the newspaper of new ways people are communicating today that weren’t available 10 years ago, 20 years ago, or 50 years ago. What has caused the new ways of communication to develop? What problems are there with the new ways of communicating? Now, use your imagination. How might people communicate in 25 years? What needs to be developed so this form of communicating can become generally used?

  • People communicate in many different ways. Find at least five examples from the newspaper of people communicating or of means of communication. Is the means of communication selected the most effective in the situation described? Why or why not? Make a chart with headings: Method of Communication, Advantages, Disadvantages. Attach your examples of news items and fill in the chart for each heading.  Explain it to someone.

  • An important part of being a good reader is to be able to think of questions about the material you are reading. Read a news or feature story in the newspaper. Write down five questions you have about the information presented. How could you find the answers to your questions? Using the methods you decided upon, try to find the answer to at least one of your questions.

Games

Use ideas and information found in the newspaper, supplements and class activities to create your own board games, card games or quizzes. These games and quizzes can be modelled on others that are commercially available (e.g. Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders).
