Descriptive Words

With a partner, scan the newspaper. Without telling each other your choice, select a topic or item in the newspaper that interests you. Then from the story or ad, write out five or six words that relate to or describe your topic or new item. Exchange these descriptive words with your reading partner and challenge each other to find the news item or topic selected.

Sports Pages

For 15 minutes read through the sports or feature section of the newspaper and keep a record of all of the punctuation symbols you see used. Which is the most frequently used punctuation mark? Which is the most unusual? Did you find any that you think are used incorrectly? Check the examples you think are incorrect against rules in a grammar handbook.

Weather Anchor

The people who give the weather reports during the television news programs actually read a script. Have students prepare TV scripts from local and national weather reports found in the newspaper. They can read these reports to their classmates, imitating the styles of their favourite weather anchors. Encourage students to make up their own visuals for their presentations. Some newspapers include weather maps in their daily weather reports these could be enlarged on a photocopier. Replicas of clouds, sun and rain drawn on light card can be used repeatedly when double-sided tape is applied.
