Read And Recycle

Woven mats can be made by rolling 18 rods of newspaper. Make an edge frame (for holding the sheets in place), by folding a sheet of newspaper in half, over and over six times. Staple the ends of the nine rods, side by side, into the holding edge frame. Weave the other nine rods through the first nine. Make three more edge frames and staple the edging on the three remaining sides tucking the ends into the middle of the framing edges. Reinforce the edges with tape. These sit-upons are handy for picnics or camping in case the ground gets damp. Take them on nature hikes when it is necessary to sit quietly in a defined space for some time to observe birds or whatever. Remember to protect the environment by not littering, throwing the sit-upons in a rubbish bin or carrying them back with you to use again.

Design a Logo

Encourage students to study advertising messages and look at the various logos and slogans. Clip logos from the newspaper and discuss why some are more effective than others. The class can design their own individual logos based on a main interest. Each student can design their own special logo. Use headline letters and graphics designs from the newspaper.
