Making
Cartoons Work
Children
can glue the panel pieces of a cartoon onto the sides of milk
cartons in proper sequence and turn the boxes to make their own
animated cartoons. Or, they can cut the cartoon characters in
sections and glue the pieces together to make crazy mixed up
creatures. They can tape record conversations among these created
characters. Because of the comic’s bright colours, the pages
make excellent gift wrap, bows and flowers for decoration. They
also make colourful wreaths or coverings for small toy containers,
waste baskets, shoe boxes or other small boxes that can be used as
desk or room organisers. Coat the items with shellac to make them
washable and more durable.

Trace
children’s feet on newspaper pages and have them cut out a
number of footprints. From headlines find large alphabet letters
to glue on each footprint and mount these over the walls, around
doors, up the walls, even on the ceiling. You can do the same
thing with a number series of footprints. Younger students can put
their names and the date on the footprints and then retrace one
every six months or so, comparing sizes. Children are amazed at
how quickly their feet grow. With older students, you can have
them count the number of words in the area covered by their foot,
and find the average for the class or group.
