News Music

Assign students the task of watching the news on television instructing them to take particular note of the type of background music that is played at various times throughout the broadcast. Choose stories from the newspaper and decide what sort of music would be appropriate if the story were to be broadcast. Perform news readings for the class or tape record readings and play back as a radio broadcast.

Drama

Take stories from the newspaper and write them into short plays. Have students work out the various moods of the story and to then select or "compose" the music themes for the drama. Create all the sound effects necessary.

Take Note

Over a two or three week period take note of all the "music people" who make it into the news section of the paper. Discuss what sort of music they are into and the reason for the story/article. Are some performers more newsworthy than others? Who and why?
