Frozen Effigy

The student is frozen in role. When given a signal, the statue comes to life to tell about some aspect of their job or life, e.g. "I’m a reporter for the… I have been investigating…. " Or the student in role gives hints as to who he/she might be and the others have to guess who they are.

Hot Seat

The teacher or student sits in a seat and immediately becomes a famous personality etc. and the class (as, perhaps journalists at a press conference) ask questions of the person giving the press conference. Journalists will take notes, think up new questions, writing up their stories later.

Cartoon Drama

Cartoons are short dramatic episodes that can be used as the basis for children’s plays. Younger students can easily memorise their parts because there is often little dialogue to learn. After groups are formed, the children in those groups can choose a newspaper cartoon they like and plan how to produce it as a play. Let them decide which part each person should play. Encourage the children to memorise and say their parts with expression, practice their drama and present it before others. Prepare the audience to listen to the presentations. As students gain experience, they can try longer comics or follow the story line of a running strip for several weeks.

To add a creative element, have students use a cartoon panel as a springboard for a story they write and create themselves.
