Categories
Look
in the classified ads for a category that has prices listed
for most items. For instance, check the used car, furniture,
or rental listings. In the category, what is the highest
asking price listed? What is the lowest? What is the average
price of at least six items listed? Is a price listed in
each ad? Why would it be omitted, do you think?
Clothing
-
Young
people are very clothes conscious. They can be made more
aware of comparison buying by studying the advertisements in
the newspaper. To help students determine how much it costs
their family to clothe them, encourage them to compare their
present clothes with the advertised prices in the newspaper.
Allow students time to compute the total cost of their
present outfits, their entire wardrobe or how much it costs
to dress the entire family in new outfits.

Students
can use the newspaper to find examples of clothes to wear to
the beach, parties, weddings or athletic competitions and
for sleeping. Compare prices of clothing from different
stores and different manufacturers. Discuss image, quality,
where made. "Paying for the label".
