Real Estate & Mortgages

A study of the newspaper’s real estate section will give students excellent information they need for problems and projects related to property values in various parts of the community, prices of houses, the cost of building lots and the terms of a mortgage.

  • Get students to determine the amount of interest on a 20 or 30 year mortgage. This will add a new dimension to their thinking.

  • Using display advertisements, students can also select furniture for a home and add up those costs.

  • Have them figure the cost of purchasing major home appliances such as a refrigerator, kitchen stove, washer and dryer. Encourage students to work with their families to determine the monthly cost of utilities. Discuss the overall costs of home ownership.

  • Using the Real Estate section of the newspaper calculate the average price for real estate in certain area. Discuss why real estate in certain areas is more or less expensive than others (eg. proximity to city, closeness to waste dumps, proximity to water etc).

  • Find the average cost of renting a three-bedroom house. Select 10 houses from each of the northern, southern, eastern and western suburbs of Perth and work out the calculations from those houses.
