Classified Ads Make Money

For most people Spring means ‘spring cleaning’. However, most people periodically go through their clothes to see what they have outgrown, and they sort out items they no longer use or need. They may decide to sell a few of the items, a refrigerator, a bike, a swing set and a set of water-skis that aren’t the right size. If they place some classified ads and take care of the phone calls, they can get some extra money from the items they sell.

  • Ask students "Does your family have items you no longer use or need?" Have students choose some items from home that they believe the family no longer wants. Encourage students to study how classified ads are written and then work on the wording of their own ads. Check the figures and the cost to run the ads in the newspaper for two weeks.

  • Check the papers for other classified ads for the same kind of items? Work out how much students should charge for their items? Try writing a classified ad for their items. How much would it cost to have the ad published for a week? Some students may like to strike a deal with their parents and actually make some pocket money!
