Shapes

  • Study the front page of a newspaper. Draw borders to enclose those elements that go together, such as news stories and their headlines or news photos and the stories that they accompany. What is the main shape used in designing the front page? Look through the rest of the newspaper. What other geometric shapes do you find either in the design or in the content of ads, news photos, etc? Which is the most used shape?

Graphs

Find the weather page or weather map in the newspaper. Look at the high and the low temperatures from the previous day. For a month, keep a record of the high and low temperatures. Develop a line graph and code to illustrate the information. If possible take an early morning, midday and evening temperature reading at your home or school each day, always at about the same time. Graph these temperature readings. How do they compare to the official highs and lows?
