Use
the newspaper grocery ads to help learn more about unit
pricing. Find ads for items that list package size and cost.
Determine the total standard units in the package, such as
the number of grams, kilos, litres etc. Then figure the
price per standard unit. How can this information help you
as a consumer?

Space
Ask
five or six people to join you in this activity. First have
each person select a newspaper page that has both news or
feature stories and advertising on it. Be sure no one has
picked the same page. Then have each person calculate the
area of the entire page. Then calculate the area covered by
advertising. What percentage of the newspaper page is filled
with advertising? Compare your calculations with the others.
What is the average percentage of advertising?

Pricing
Choose
several newspaper advertisements that feature products that
are on sale. Using the sale price and the regular price,
figure the per cent of savings for at least five products.
Which item has the highest percentage of savings? Are
percentages used in the ad, especially in the headline? Are
the figures accurate? How could pricing information be
presented for a least one product to make sure a consumer
understands it clearly?
